- Database programs help people keep track of lists of information: names
- and addresses, mailing lists, expenses, inventories, and itineraries, to
- name a few.

- Nan Walker is a syndicated celebrity columnist. She used to keep her
- celebrity facts on index cards. Sometimes the cards got lost. She
- frequently couldn't find the information she needed.
-
- @
- %
-
- Now Nan uses a database program to keep track of celebrities. Nothing
- ever gets lost, and she never has trouble locating the information she
- needs.

- Here's one of the lists Nan created using the AppleWorks (AW) database
- program. Information shown for each celebrity includes the celebrity's
- pseudonym, real name, astrological sign, year of birth, and profession.

-
- As you might expect, people who develop database programs have created
- their own language. Luckily, it's pretty straightforward.
- @

-
- All of the information blinking on the screen (that is, all of the
- information about one celebrity) is called a record.

- Each kind of information, such as Pseudonym or Real Name, is called a

-
- All of the information collected about a particular subject (that is, all
- of the information that Nan has collected about her celebrities) is
- called a database.
- @

-
- One of the major benefits of a database program is that it lets
- you store lots of information. Nan, for example, can store several
- hundred celebrity records on her Apple II.

-
- For the next few minutes, imagine that you're Nan. You just sent
- out your weekly column, so you're feeling relaxed and now have a
- few spare minutes to mull over your database.
- @

- The first thing you do is browse through the information you have

- It's also easy to change or modify
- information. Let's say a reader
- writes Nan to report that Dale
- Evans's real name was not
- Frances Smith, but Frances Octavia
- Smith.

- Take a minute to look at what's on the

-
- A. Alphabetically by real last name.
-
- B. Alphabetically by pseudonym.

-
- But let's suppose you want a list
- that displays names alphabetically
- by real name.
- @
- #%
- 37 4 43 8
-
- You don't have to retype a thing;
- all you do is move the cursor so it
- rests on a name in the Real Name
- category and then tell AW to
- rearrange the records in that
- category.
- @

- Database programs make it easy to change the way information is

- Now suppose you want a list that only includes
